How does these happened?

MTS files are primarily associated with AVCHD and commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic. AVCHD MTS files can be burned to Blu-ray discs and played in compatible devices, such as Blu-ray disc players and the Sony PlayStation3. Various video programs can edit or convert MTS file format which is generally used by Sony and some Panasonic video cameras.

Clips from Cannon VIXIA series like Canon VIXIA HF200, VIXIA HF R11, VIXIA HV30 are in AVCHD MTS/M2TS format with a .mts/.m2ts file extension. Those files are not compatible with iMovie, iMovie" 08, iMovie" 09, thus can not be readed and further edited by iMovie.
